Valentine's Poll Results

Winners have received a Pet Pamper Pack

Love is in the air – and mail for our three Valentine’s Day Poll winners: Congratulations Kate Thompson, Jenni Bryant and Jessica Arnavas. Our Valentine’s Day Poll held throughout February has now concluded.

VetShopAustralia
would like to thank all participants; as our poll results have revealed many interesting statistics about the love between pet and pet owner. Valentine’s Day has led to more than just partners sharing three special words; 81% of respondents surveyed admit they regularly say “I love you” to their pets. Romance is also in abundant this month with 77% of pet owners giving their pets a kiss as a gesture of love.

The majority of respondents, 92%, agree that buying treats shows their pets love on Valentine’s Day. Of course, the ultimate way to show pets love is to care for their health and wellbeing; as is made evident by the 82% of respondents who maintain their bond by walking their pets. Another 72% of respondents like to pamper their pet, giving them a bath and a brush.

The results of the poll prove there are numerous ways we show our pets love and they definitely play a huge role in our Valentine’s celebrations.

Animal Valentine's

There is nothing more adorable than seeing two animals bonding and sharing a special friendship. Some of the best animal love stories to date have formed from the most unlikely pairs you could ever imagine.

The Monkey and the Pigeon
Monkey Hugs!
They're an odd couple in every sense but a monkey and a pigeon have become inseparable at an animal sanctuary in China. The 12-week-old macaque - who was abandoned by his mother - was close to death when it was rescued on Neilingding Island, in Goangdong Province. After being taken to an animal hospital his health began to improve but he seemed spiritless - until he developed a friendship with a white pigeon. Today the two are inseparable!

A Perfect Match
The Dog and the Elephant
You may have heard the story about the bond between an elephant, Tarra and a stray dog, Bella who lived together as friends in a Tennessee animal sanctuary. The duo made headlines around the world for the love they shared for each other. They were so close, in fact, that once when Bella got injured a few years ago and had to spend three weeks recuperating in the sanctuary office, Tarra just stood in the field waiting.

The Dolphin and the Labrador
A Swimming Date
In recent months a normally land-loving Labrador called Ben has taken to pacing the island’s pier and then jumping into the water as soon as Duggie the dolphin appears. According to his owner, local hotelier, Pat Doohan, Ben and Duggie could spend up to three hours at a time and several times a day frolicking and playing in the sea. An unlikely couple, yet the two never go a day without bonding and playing in the ocean.

Caring Crow
The Crow and the Kitten
Who has ever heard of a crow adopting a needy kitten? Well believe it or not that is exactly how the story goes in this next animal love story. A homeless kitten was fed and played with everyday by a very loving and loyal crow! Eventually a nice man happened to spot the two playing and was so shocked at the unlikely friendship of the two animals that he adopted the kitten. It was no surprise of course that without a doubt, the crow came to visit every single day!

Happy Valentines Day Everybody!

Pick up a Lead not a Brief Case

Opening the door of VetShopAustralia as a new employee, I was greeted instantly by Matilda and Hendrix; a purebred Australian Cattle Dog and German Shepherd respectively. I was to discover that VetShopAustralia has been a pet-friendly workplace since its inception in 1999! Employees are welcome to bring their pets to the office; after a health check by the in-house Vet, Dr. Mark. At first, I considered this unusual, but fitting for a company that puts animal care first. Upon reflection; I realised that dogs have many roles in the workplace. A dog and fish at both my local mechanic and hairdresser also amuse customers in their waiting rooms. Dogs have increasingly assumed positions of vital importance and responsibility in the workforce over the last century. As intelligent animals with a heightened sense of smell, compared to humans, they actually do specific jobs better than we do! Careers where being canine is a prerequisite include:
    Phoenix at work
  • Guide Dogs: aid the vision impaired
  • Herding Dogs: assist in the mustering of cattle and sheep
  • Guard Dogs: protect private property
  • Therapy Dogs: provide comfort and entertainment for the ill and elderly
  • Police/ Sniffer Dogs: aide investigations to find illegal drugs and imports
  • Search Dogs: find missing people
  • Sled Dogs: assist in the transportation of people and goods in the snow
Even when a dog doesn’t hold an official role in the workplace, companies worldwide are still finding reasons to introduce pets into their workplace. In 2010, a study by Central Michigan University found that people working in groups are more cooperative when a dog is a member of the team. A Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia, Dr Lisa Wood, has also published information to help Australian local government organisations review how pets can strengthen communities. She claims pet friendly work environments reduce stress, increase productivity, boost morale and strengthen employee relationships.

This initiative is becoming universally widespread, with businesses in Taiwan and the USA in particular embracing pets. Multinational Corporation Google is among them, their Code of Conduct stating “We’re a dog company”. However, owners should always assess whether their pet is suited to their work environment, before introducing them to the workplace. For example, territorial or untrained dogs could potentially disrupt other employees.

Clearly, pet friendly workplaces can provide the ultimate work / life balance we all strive to achieve.  Dogs really are a productive member of the workforce, so why not investigate making your work pet friendly? I would recommend it.
